Setting the Colors Page 1
By using the right/left arrow keys you may flip
through each area designation. And by using the
up/down arrow keys, may flip through each color
block.
Some area designations control more than one area
of the screen. After selecting the color block
and area designation to go with it, press the
[enter] key to preview it on the example screen.
%PAUSE
Setting the Screen Saver Page 2
Press the [tab] key to enter the number of minutes
you want FH to wait for a keypress before activating
the built-in screen blanker. You cannot disable it,
but you may specify up to 254 minutes.
After entering the value you desire and [enter] is
pressed, you are returned to the color configuration
process. For this value to be saved for future use,
you must save your changes with [F10].
%1
Configuring the Program Page 1
On the program configuration screen, you can alter
the program settings to suit your tastes.
Use the [space-bar] to toggle the setting which is
hilighted and [tab] to change from one selection
to the next. However, the workdrive is different.
You need to enter a valid path-name or [enter] to
accept the current choice. While the program is
waiting for a response here, F10 is inactive.
%PAUSE
Configuring the Program Page 2
The "user excluded" area is for listing files which
you do not want FH to be able to MOVE or DELETE.
The program has built-in protection against moving
the most common Operating System files, as well as
it's own program files and overlays. In this area
you may select up to eighteen complete filenames
the program will protect in the same manner.
%PAUSE
Configuring the Program Page 3
In the "user excluded" area, you may change previous
file names, or delete them from the list, simply by
pressing the up-arrow. [Enter] on a blank line to
quit. This will take you back to Attr. Handling and
you can [tab] and change other settings or press the
[F10] to save your configuration.
On the following pages you can read the help for the
individual settings.

Configuring the Program Page 4
1) Attribute Handling
The program, by default, will retain the attributes
of files after a copy or move. You may specify if
you want the program to reset the attributes of any
files it copies or moves by changing this setting.
With Reset in effect, files will NOT keep their
Read-Only, Hidden or System attributes after a copy
or move, but will reset to Attribute only.
%PAUSE
Configuring the Program Page 5
2) Directory Exit
The program can be configured to automatically
exit to the directory from which you began FH, or
to the directory you are in when you press [esc].
Using [alt-x] instead of [esc] will exit exactly
opposite of whatever you have this set to.
%PAUSE
Configuring the Program Page 6
3) File Attributes
The program can be configured to act upon files
which have special attributes. You can tell FH
you want access to Hidden and System files, as
well as have the ability to alter the attribute
of a file from within File Handler.
The Change Attribute function, [alt-a], remains
disabled if this setting is disabled.
%PAUSE

4) Display Styles
a) single column or wide format
Files can be displayed in a single column
in which file information is adjacent to
its respective filename. Or, displayed in
four columns, in which file information
is shown near the bottom of the screen.
%PAUSE

4) Display Styles (continued)
b) Mixed Case or ALL CAPS
Some people find it easier to read the
file-names when in mixed case.
Use F10 to save your settings from this screen.
%2
Special File Handling Page 1
File Handler will not allow its own files to be
moved or deleted, because moving or deleting them
while File Handler is running can be dangerous to
your computer. Other files are also excluded, for
instance, the Operating System files IBMDOS.COM,
IBMBIO.COM, DRBIOS.SYS and DRBDOS.SYS, MSDOS.SYS,
IO.SYS, SYSTEM.INI and WIN.INI. You may define up
to eighteen additional files to be protected in
this way within the program's configuration menu.
%3
The "Action" Menu Page 1
On the left, the keys that are highlighted can
be used to execute each function. For some of the
actions, files need to be tagged first.
The "hot keys" on the right may be used while at
the "Main" Screen as well. You will soon find it
unnecessary to use the "Action" Menu at all, once
you become familiar with the "hot keys".
You can shift the menu with the right/left keys.
%PAUSE
The "Action" Menu Page 2
eXit Orvd at the bottom of the menu indicates
that using [x] from the "Action" Menu or [alt-x]
in general, overrides whichever exit setting
you have configured. For instance, if you have
configured the program to exit to the original
directory ( the directory you were in when you
started the File Handler System ) then pressing
[alt-x] will exit to the directory in which you
are currently logged.
%PAUSE
The "Action" Menu Page 3
Exit and Execute Function
Intentionally left off the "Action" Menu, the
[ctrl-e] and [alt-e] "hot-keys" allow you to run
external programs. [Alt-e] will execute a file
that is tagged. Or when no file is tagged, will
run the command you specify at a prompt. If you
choose, you may edit the file: "FHD.BAT", which
is invoked when [ctrl-e] is pressed.
%PAUSE
The "Action" Menu Page 4
To specify a "PAUSE" before returning, add the
string: " #P " to the command-tail. (Be sure to
include spaces before and after the "#P".)
No shell to DOS occurs from File Handler. The
[alt-e] and [ctrl-e] keys exit FH safely with an
errorlevel, which the installed file "FH.BAT"
will process accordingly.
%4
The "Main" Screen Page 1
Arrow keys move the pointer around the work area.
Pressing [enter] on a directory specification
immediately loads that directory, unless files
have been tagged. Files may be tagged with the
[enter] key for individual files, or [alt-l].
When a file is tagged with the [enter] key, the
pointer will advance in the same direction as the
previous movement.

"Hot-Keys" can be used thoughout the program.
You will find more information about them from
the "Action" Menu and its help screens.
Other information about the program's features
can be found in the FH.DOC file which came with
your archived copy of File Handler.
%PAUSE
The "Main" Screen Page 5
The far right area of the screen is reserved for
statistics and general information about the disk
to which you are currently logged.
When changing drives, use [shift-tab] to activate
the drive menu. Use ONLY the right arrow key to
highlight the drive to which you want to log, and
press [enter].
%PAUSE
The "Main" Screen Page 6
Also in the right statistics area are a few of the
most common "hot-key" commands.
The Verify setting will always be set to reflect
the actual verify status of DOS's Verify ON|OFF
switch. You can change DOS's Verify status and
it will remain set ON or OFF even after you exit
the File Handler Program.
%5
Search Files Page 1
Use the [PgDn] and [PgUp] keys to page through the
various directories in which matching files were
found. Notice, on the right bottom (and top) that
there will be a block or an arrow pointing up or
down in the bar indicator column, to indicate if
more files are listed on the previous or following
page. You may move the cursor up and down with the
arrow keys to see all the file names in the block.
%PAUSE
Search Files Page 2
If you see a directory containing files you need
to act upon, press the [F4] key to quit and change
to that directory.
You may use [alt-d] to delete files across your
hard drive; [alt-m] moves files to a single drive
or path; [alt-c] copies files in the same manner.
The program will prompt you for verification for
each directory before taking action.
%6
Viewing Files
You can flip through the pages with the PgUp and
PgDn keys. [Enter] will load the next file tagged
to view and [esc] will exit, discarding any other
files you have queued to view.
The [F10] key is used to keep the tag on the file
currently being viewed, so that you can act on
that file after returning to the "Main" Screen.

Help is available by pressing [F1] throughout the
program. You can also get help by starting the
program with "FH /?". If you have a monochome
monitor, you will need to put "-M" on the command
line. You may skip these opening screens with a
"-S" on the command-line as well. It would be a
good idea to add these commands to your "FH.BAT"
rather than having to key them in every time.

This screen window is your help window throughout
the program. You may cancel help with [esc] at any
point. Please read important information included
in the FH.DOC file. More Command-line switches are
explained with the command-line switch "/?".
You will want to start by configuring your settings
by pressing [F3] once you are at the "Main" screen.
[F3] twice, and more program configuration settings
are available for adjustment.
